Pet Sitting

Need a reliable, trustworthy, adult who can take care of your pets while you’re out of town?

My name is Elgé – sounds like “L. J.” and I might be the right pet sitter to take care of your home while you travel. I have been managing households and pets for over 30 years. I have also fostered dogs and taken care of cats, fish, ferrets and chickens. I have some experience with horses and small farm animals. I also like snakes and reptiles.

Below, I tell you a bit about the pet sitting services I provide.

House Sitting

Video cameras and security systems can help but they can’t do much if something goes wrong.

Only a human can turn the water off if a pipe bursts or reset an alarm that goes off blares unexpectedly. Nothing quite beats having a trusted house sitter to make absolutely certain your home--and everything in it--is as well cared for as if you were there yourself.

Even an empty house needs maintenance.

Plants and landscaping need to be tended. Mail and packages need to be collected. When you hire me, you know there won’t be any unauthorized guests or parties in your house. Plus, thieves tend to steer clear of a house that looks lived in.

Your house taken care of your way.

When I meet with a new client, we go through a thorough checklist of all the things a house sitter needs to know about your home. I will take care of your house, plants and pets exactly the way you want it done; not the way I’m guessing it should be done.

Pet Sitting

It’s hard to relax and enjoy your vacation if you’re worried about your pets.

You can’t leave anxious or high energy pets with just anybody; they need someone who understands anxious behavior and how to manage it. I have many years of experience using behavior modification to train pets  how to “go with the program.” I am able to quickly develop a trusting relationship with just about any pet. They can tell I am a calm, centered person, so they tend to trust me quickly.

Compassionate care for special needs pets.

Got a special diet? Multiple meals a day or a need for homemade food? No problem. I’ve had pets that required a special diet, too. You can rest assured I will wrap my day round their needs.

Do your pets need multiple medications throughout  the day? No problem. I’m very good at keeping a schedule.  I’ve had special needs pets, too and I know how important it is to stick to a feeding, sleeping and exercise routine - especially when pets’ main people are away. My goal is to focus on maintaining their daily schedule and doing what I can to reduce their anxiety.

Plant & Garden Care

There's more to know about plants than, "You need to water them once in a while."

You have to consider what kind of plant it is, whether it’s inside or outside, how much sun it gets, air temperature, humidity, etc. Non-plant people think this sounds crazy, but I get it. I’m a life-long gardener and house plant person so I know when plants need to be watered and how much. Got special directions? Put them in writing and I will follow them to the letter.

All My Dogs

I have been a pet owner my whole adult life. I started with cats in college and then shortly after I bought my first house in 2004, Savannah came into my life. Tia followed the next year and then after they passed, I got Freddy, then Coco. I’ve been without pets for a couple of years now and it’s been hard! I look forward to giving yours tons of affection.

Following is a bit about the dogs who have adopted me and what I’ve learned from each one.

SAVANNAH

Just out of college, I had a job shepherding hyperactive kids through the school day. It was hard, really hard, but it made me an expert at behavior modification. It was also excellent training for the naughtiest dog in the world, Savannah!

When I got Savannah, she was about year and half old and I was her sixth owner! It quickly became obvious she was smarter and more head strong than the previous owners  who wanted a pretty dog they could leave alone outside.  Savannah was not that dog. She had boundless energy and was constantly on the lookout for the next batch of trouble she could find. She also didn’t care one bit what I wanted. I had to earn her respect. And, I did.

I learned a lot from Savannah about the importance of body language when establishing a relationship with a dog. Training with Savannah also reconfirmed what I’d learned working with kids, “All is lost if you get mad. Be cool.”  I slowly earned her respect through continuous boundary setting, exercise and socialization; we went to the dog park almost every day for 11 years. After all the times she did a runner, it's a miracle that dog died in my arms of old age at 15.
